Not only ipads but other electronics can get hot and there are some thing you can do to prevent them-

1- Keep it in a cooler place:

You have to keep your ipad at a cooler place. That don't means you gotta put it in freezer or in from of a AC. Rapid cooling is a problem as well. You should keep it in a normal temperature. 

2- Give your ipad rest.

Don't use it for hours, just as everything it needs rest as well. I even advice you to restart it once in some days. You will see a change in its performance as well.

3- Don't use it while chargin.

When ipad is charging, it will already be warmer than usual. You should choose between using an app and charging the device. 

4- Prevent direct sunlight.

If you use it in direct sunlight it will shutdown in what 10-15 minutes. If using an ipad out necessary use it under a tree, under an awning or even an umbrella😀. 

5- Take it to Apple and repair it.

If its overheating constantly, especially when not in heavy use or under sunlight, it could be a sign that something is wrong internally.
